The opening day of the ongoing second Test between England and South Africa saw complete domination of the English pacers. The hosts’ bowling attack steamrolled the visitors’ batting unit as the Proteas lost five wickets for just 83 in the first session at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester.

Veteran pacer Stuart Broad did the major carnage, picking up a couple of wickets while giving away just 17 runs in six overs, including a maiden. Broad’s tactic to remove South Africa captain Dean Elgar grabbed maximum eyeballs as he perfectly set up Elgar to cut short the left-handed batter’s stay in the middle.

It all happened during the 13th over, where Broad bowled a cluster of deliveries, all from round the wicket, both coming in and getting away. The Nottinghamshire cricketer then went on a good length just outside off, straightening just a touch as Elgar looked to drive on the up but ended up giving a thick edge in the slip cordon where Jonny Bairstow made no mistake to take the catch.

Here is how the set-up took place:

  • 12.1 – Broad to Elgar, no run, good length outside off, left alone by the batter.
  • 12.2 – Broad to Elgar, no run, good length delivery came in and is hit on batters’ pad.
  • 12.3 – Broad to Elgar, no run, full delivery and Elgar’s feet go nowhere as he pushed to mid-off.
  • 12.4 – Broad to Elgar, no run, a huge appeal as the delivery came in sharply to hit Elgar’s pad. The English players gathered for a review but eventually decided not to take it.
  • 12.5 – Broad to Elgar, out Caught by Bairstow!! A superb low catch from Bairstow as the edge flew to his right at third slip, and Broad stormed in to celebrate.
