India batter Shubman Gill is all set for his maiden stint in the County Championship in England as he has joined Glamorgan for the remainder of the 2022 season, subject to visa clearance.

The club hasn’t yet made any official announcement, but according to reports, if all goes well, Shubman will be the seventh Indian player to be signed by a county team in the ongoing season.

Before Shubman, Cheteshwar Pujara (Sussex), Washington Sundar (Lancashire), Krunal Pandya (Warwickshire for Royal London Cup), Mohammed Siraj (Warwickshire for County Championship), Umesh Yadav (Middlesex) and Navdeep Saini (Kent) have all joined the current season.

Overall, the right-handed batter will be the third Indian to feature for Glamorgan in County Championship after former India cricketers Ravi Shastri (1987-91) and Sourav Ganguly (2005).

Notably, Shubman is coming off a superb form in the recent ODI series against West Indies and Zimbabwe, where he piled up 205 runs at 102.50 average and 245 runs at 122.50 average, respectively.

When it comes to the longest format, the 22-year-old has experience of playing 11 Test matches in which he has scored 579 runs at an average of 30.47. His last red-ball game came against England in Birmingham in July this year, where he scored 17 and 4 in India’s defeat.

Shubman has a noteworthy record in the domestic arena. So far, he has featured in 12 first-class matches for his home team Punjab in the Ranji Trophy, where he has scored 1176 runs at an average of 65.33.

Speaking about Glamorgan, they are currently third in the Division Two table with five wins in 10 matches. In the remaining games, they will compete with Worcestershire from September 5, Middlesex from September 12, Derbyshire from September 20 and Sussex from September 26.
