Australian white-ball captain Aaron Finch announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs) on Saturday.
Cricket Australia confirmed that the third and final ODI in the ongoing series against New Zealand would be Finch’s last game in the 50-overs format. He will continue to lead Australia in T20 cricket.
Finch too took to Instagram and posted an emotional letter, saying that it was a privilege playing with and against some of the greatest players of all time. He also mentioned that representing Australia was his dream as a kid and thanked his fans for their messages and well wishes.
“It’s been one hell of a ride! To play with and against some of the greatest players of all time has been a privilege. Representing Australia was my dream as a kid and to have been the opportunities I have is beyond anything I could’ve hoped for. Thanks so much for all of the kind words, messages and well wishes!” said Finch on Instagram.
The right-handed opener has endured an awful run of form in ODI cricket this year, scoring just 169 runs at 13, with five of his last 12 innings being ducks including two days ago in Cairns. In his last seven innings he could add only 26 runs.
Despite such a lean end of his ODI career, Finch will exit with an outstanding record that brought over 5400 runs with 17 hundreds – currently the third-most for Australia behind Ricky Ponting (29), David Warner (18) and Mark Waugh (18). He was part of the final eleven which won the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup.
