The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on Friday, announced the replacement of Jasprit Bumrah for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022, scheduled to start on October 16 in Australia.
Notably, Bumrah was ruled out of the global showpiece event with a back injury. He had returned ahead of the T20Is against Australia after being sidelined for over two months due to the same problem.
However, after playing two T20Is against the Aussies, Bumrah couldn’t participate in the final T20I and the subsequent limited-overs series against South Africa before getting ruled out officially.
Fast bowler Mohammed Shami has been named as Bumrah’s replacement for the upcoming mega event. As per BCCI, Shami has reached Australia and will join the rest of the squad before India’s warm-up matches against Australia and New Zealand. Further, Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur have been named as backups and will soon travel to Australia.
Shami has so far played 17 T20I matches and picked up 18 wickets at an average of over 31. He also has 99 scalps to his name in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Shami last played for India in the shortest format against Namibia in the 2021 T20 World Cup.
“The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Mohammed Shami as Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement in India’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup squad. Shami has reached Australia and will link up with the squad in Brisbane ahead of the warm-up matches,” wrote BCCI in an official statement.
“Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur have been named as backups and will travel to Australia shortly,” the statement added.
