Dushmantha Chameera (3/15) and Wanindu Hasaranga (3/8) led Sri Lanka’s fiery bowling display against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in a T20 World Cup game at the Simonds Stadium on Tuesday as the Islanders got their campaign back on track with an emphatic 79-run victory.

Opening Pathum Nissanka played a sensible knock of 74 in 60 balls, helping Sri Lanka post a competitive 152-8 after a hat-trick from leg-spinner Karthik Meiyappan derailed the Asia Cup champion, who suffered an embarrassing 55-run defeat against Namibia in the opening match of the tournament.

Brief Scores: Sri Lanka 152-8 (Pathum Nissanka 74, Dhananjaya de Silva 33; Karthik Meiyappan 3/19, Zahoor Khan 2/26) beat UAE 73 in 17.1 overs (Junaid Siddique 18; Wanindu Hasaranga 3/8, Dushmantha Chameera 3/15, Pramod Madushan 2/15) by 79 runs.

Netherlands beats Namibia

Earlier, Netherlands suffered a middle-order collapse on their way to a nerve-racking, five-wicket win over Namibia that took them a step closer to qualifying for the Super-12 stage.

Chasing a modest total of 122 for victory, the Dutch’ lost three wickets for just 10 runs between the 14th to 17th over, turning the game into a thriller.

With six runs required in the final over, all-rounder Bas de Leede (30 not out) smashed his counterpart David Wiese for a boundary and ran another two down the ground to register a win with five wickets in hand and three balls to spare.

Brief scores: Namibia 122-6 in 20 overs (Jan Frylinck 43; Bas de Leede 2/18) lost to Netherlands 122-5 in 19.3 overs (Vikramjit Singh 39, Bas de Leede 30 not out; JJ Smit 2/24) by 5 wickets.
