After losing their opening game against Scotland in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022, West Indies bounced back and defeated Zimbabwe at Bellerive Oval in Hobart on Wednesday to keep their hopes alive in the multi-team tournament.
The Nicholas Pooran-led side managed to post a competitive total of 153/7 on the board in 20 overs. Opener Johnson Chares top-scored with 45, but the real impetus came from Rovman Powell (28) and Akeal Hosein (23 no), who helped Windies get past the 150-run mark.
Powell smashed a couple of sixes during his stay, and one of those sixes was a 104m monster shot that went outside the ground. It all happened on the third delivery of the 20th over bowled by Blessing Murzarabani.
The right-arm pacer went for short delivery, and Powell clobbered it 14 meters out of the ground over midwicket for a massive six. The insane hit left Powell’s teammate Hosein shell-shocked. Hosein, who was at the non-striker’s end, couldn’t believe his eyes and was left totally dumbfounded with the dazzling shot of Powell.

After posting 153/7, the Men in Maroon produced a phenomenal performance with the ball, packing Zimbabwe for 122 and winning the contest by 31 runs.
The bowling duo of Alzarri Joseph and Jason Holder did the damage, with Joseph bagging four wickets for just 16 runs in his quota of 4 overs while Holder picked up three scalps for 12 in 3.2 overs.
“It is very encouraging, but the job is not done. We have another game and have to win it to get to the main tournament. It is all about pulling it back for the team, trying to get an early wicket, and, if not, keep it tight. With the new ball, it (the conditions) was pretty good, but it still was a good wicket for cricket. All in all, happy with the performance, and the team put in a big effort today,” said Joseph at the post-match presentation.
