In the ongoing 22nd match of the T20 World Cup 2022 between South Africa and Bangladesh, Proteas batter Rilee Rossouw sizzled with the bat, smashing a wonderful century at Sydney Cricket Ground.
Rossouw took just 51 deliveries to reach the triple-figure mark and became the first South African batter to hit a hundred in a T20 World Cup. Further, the left-handed batter has the fourth fastest century in the 20-over showpiece event after Chris Gayle (fastest and second fastest) and Brendon McCullum (third fastest).
It all happened on the fourth delivery of the 17th over bowled by Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan when Rossouw pushed wide of cover. After reaching the triple-figure mark, Rossouw sat to his knees and emotionally celebrated the accomplishment.
Fastest hundreds in Men’s T20 World Cups:
- 47 balls – Chris Gayle vs England 2016
- 50 balls – Chris Gayle vs South Africa, 2007
- 51 balls – Brendon McCullum vs Bangladesh. 2012
- 52 balls – Rilee Rossouw vs Bangladesh, 2022*
- 58 balls – Ahmed Shehzad vs Bangladesh, 2014
After losing captain Temba Bavuma in the first over, Rossouw and Quinton de Kock joined hands to take their team out of trouble. The duo formed a game-changing partnership of 168 runs for the second wicket to take the momentum away from the Tigers.
De Kock was dismissed at 63 by Afif Hossain, and soon Rossouw was also sent back at 109 by Shakib. Riding on Rossouw’s incredible knock, South Africa managed to post 205/5 in their allotted 20 overs.
“t was good to watch, knowing Rilee (Rossouw), he’s done it for quite a while now. It’s good to have him back in our side. He walked in and gave us some impetus, it was a treat to watch,” said De Kock when asked about Rossouw’s batting display in the post-innings chat.
