Bangladesh pacer Taskin Ahmed recorded his career-best figures (4/25) in T20Is and his side started their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 campaign with a tight nine-run victory over Netherlands on Monday (October 24).

Playing their first match of the tournament, Bangladesh posted 144-8 on the board in their stipulated 20 overs before bundling out Netherlands for 135 on the last ball.

It was the first time Bangladesh have won a game in the Super 12 stage of a T20 World Cup.  In the 2021 edition, Bangladesh played five games but did not win a single match in the second round. Before that in six editions, they never won a Super 12 fixture in T20 World Cups despite winning a Group 1 encounter against West Indies in 2007.

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan, who has featured in all seven previous T20 World Cups, expressed his relief after the win against Netherlands .

“I’ve played all of them and never won. That was (at the) back of our mind. I think that’s why we were a little nervous with the bat,” the left-hander said in his post-match interview.

“(But) the way our fast bowlers bowled was tremendous,” he added.

Brief scores: Bangladesh 144-8 in 20 overs (Afif Hossain 38; Paul van Meekeren 2/21) beat Netherlands 135 in 20 overs (Colin Ackermann 62, Paul van Meekeren 24; Taskin Ahmed 4/25) by 9 runs.
