India captain Rohit Sharma was in complete awe of superstar Virat Kohli after the former skipper sizzled with a match-winning 64 against Bangladesh in their T20 World Cup 2022 Super 12 match in Adelaide on November 2.
Kohli smashed his third half-century as India secured a nail-biting thriller to top the Group 2 table and strengthen their semi-final chances. Kohli took his tally to 220 runs from 4 matches and overtook Netherlands’ Max O’Dowd, who has 213 runs to his credit.
Further, it was also a historic knock in Kohli’s illustrious career as the Delhi-lad became the highest run-getter in T20 World Cup history. Kohli surpassed Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene to accomplish the landmark.
After the game, captain Rohit was quizzed about Kohli’s form in the multi-team tournament stating he always believed that Kohli was in a good rhythm and was backing his teammate to get the job done.
“In my opinion, he was always there, it was a matter of a few innings here and there, and he got it in the Asia Cup. We never had any doubts, and the way he has been batting in this World Cup has been tremendous, and he is really doing it for us,” Rohit said at the post-match presentation.
Rohit also lavished praise on vice-captain KL Rahul, who smashed a brilliant half-century and accelerated the run-flow from the beginning. Notably, Rahul was going through a lean patch, and his place was questioned after he managed just 22 runs in the first 3 matches in the competition. But, Rahul came out all guns blazing, smashing a 31-ball 50 with the help of 4 sixes.
“Also liked the way how KL played today. We know what sort of a player he is, if he bats the way he can, he puts the team in a different position,” Rohit added.
