Team India’s ICC title drought has continued after their campaign in the T20 World Cup 2022 ended with a loss against England in the semi-final. India last lifted an ICC trophy back in 2013 when they won the Champions Trophy. Since then, the Men in Blue have failed to grab another ICC title.
India had a dream run between the period of 2007 and 2013, when they won three ICC trophies – the T20 World Cup in 2007, the ODI World Cup in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2013 – under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. But things haven’t been well for India since their last glory at the ICC event.
In the recent past, many experts have even criticized Indian players for giving preference to the Indian Premier League (IPL) and missing games for the national team. Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s childhood coach Dinesh Lad has also joined the list and lambasted players for prioritizing IPL over the Indian team.
Speaking about the red-hot topic, Lad called out players for their frequent absence and reckoned this as a reason for instability in the outfit and India not winning the ICC trophy.
“I thought, maybe, in the last seven-eight months, we are not a stable team. If we are preparing for the World Cup, it should be an established team. In the last seven months, somebody is coming to open the innings, somebody is coming to bowl, there is no stability,” said Lad while speaking to Sportskeeda.
Lad observed that players should avoid playing in the cash-rich league if they seriously want to win the World Cup, and they should play every international game.
“I don’t think so (on workload management as a potential reason). Everybody in the world is playing because they are professionals, not a workload, you can say. Why are they playing in the IPL? Don’t play the IPL if you want to win the World Cup. In actual professional grades, they should play every game (at the international level) because we are getting something from that. It’s not an honorary job, and there should be no compromise in international cricket,” he added.
