The ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia has reached its concluding stage, with only the tournament’s final between Pakistan and England left to be played at Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday (November 13).
This year’s edition has seen some spectacular performances from players belonging to various teams. Quite a few contests went down to the wire, and players left no stone unturned to entertain their fans. Following the league and semi-final fixtures, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has picked nine exceptional performers who have been nominated for the Player of the Tournament shortlist.
Maximum of three players are from England, while two each are from arch-rivals Pakistan and India. Similarly, one player each has been picked from Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. Here are the nine nominees:
Virat Kohli (India)
Virat Kohli got back into his rich form and played a vital role in India’s journey to the semis. In 6 games, Kohli scored 296 runs at a mind-boggling average of 98.66 and a strike rate of 136.40. He smashed four half-centuries in the tournament.
Suryakumar Yadav (India)
There is no doubt that Suryakumar Yadav is having a dream run in the year 2022, and he was among the most impactful batter in the ongoing edition of the T20 World Cup. The right-handed batter scored 239 runs in six matches at a remarkable strike rate of 189.68, including three half-centuries
Shadab Khan (Pakistan)
Shadab Khan was Pakistan’s top performer in their run to the final, helping the side with both bat and ball. So far, he has picked up 10 wickets in six games, with best figures of 3/22 and an economy of 6.59. Shadab has also scored 78 runs in the tournament, including a fifty in a must-win clash against South Africa.
Shaheen Afridi (Pakistan)
Shaheen Afridi didn’t have a good start in the tournament but slowly gained his rhythm. He went wicketless in his first two games but ended up picking 10 wickets in six matches at an exceptional economy of 6.17.
Sam Curran (England)
England all-rounder Sam Curran has been phenomenal in England’s journey to finals. In five matches, Curran has claimed 10 wickets at 13.60 and an economy of 7.28.
Jos Buttler (England)
Jos Buttler, the England captain, has led his team from the front in the tournament. He scored 199 runs in five matches at a strike rate of 143.16, with two half-centuries. Buttler also has eight dismissals from behind the stumps.
Alex Hales (England)
England opener Alex Hales is the leading run-scorer for his side in the tournament. On his comeback to the team after three years, Hales scored 211 runs in five matches at a strike rate of 148.59 with the help of two half-centuries.
Sikandar Raza (Zimbabwe)
Sikandar Raza was absolutely sensational with his all-round performance in the tournament. He scored 219 runs in eight matches, with one half-century. Raza also bagged 10 wickets in the tournament.
Wanindu Hasaranga (Sri Lanka)
Ace Sri Lankan spinner Wanindu Hasaranga is currently the leading wicket-taker in the tournament, with 15 scalps to his name in eight matches. His wickets came at a sensational average of 13.26 and an economy of 6.41, with 3/8 being his best figures.
