Indian batting sensation Suryakumar Yadav has overtaken Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizzzwan to claim the top spot amongst batters in the latest released ICC T20I Rankings on Wednesday.
Notably, Suryakumar has been in tremendous form in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. In 3 matches so far, Surya has smashed two half-centuries, including a brilliant knock of 68, which came in a losing cause against South Africa.
The Pune-born batter has now become the 23rd player overall to top the ICC T20I rankings for batters and only the second Indian, after superstar Virat Kohli to claim the numero uno position.
“Yadav’s 51 not out off 25 balls against the Netherlands in Sydney and a valiant 68 off 40 against South Africa in Perth have helped him overtake New Zealand’s Devon Conway and Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan, who had held the top spot since 4 September this year,” wrote ICC in a release.
Apart from Suryakumar, New Zealand batter Glenn Phillips has advanced in the rankings and reached the seventh position after scores of 104 against Sri Lanka and 62 against England.
Further, South Africa batter Rilee Rossouw also broke into the top 10, thanks to his 109 against Bangladesh. He moved up 17 places to a career-best eighth spot. Similarly, England captain Jos Buttler moved up three slots climbing to 14th position courtesy of his brilliant 73 against New Zealand.
When it comes to the bowlers, Sri Lanka spinner Wanindu Hasaranga has minimized the gap with top-ranked Rashid Khan. Notably, Hasaranga is the leading wicket-taker in this edition of the T20 World Cup. In seven matches, the leggie has taken 13 wickets at an average of 13.53 and an economy of close to 7.
“There is plenty of movement on the latest list for T20I bowlers, with Sri Lanka all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga going agonizingly close to claiming the top ranking from fellow spinner Rashid Khan,” ICC wrote further.
