Just two days after losing the home Test series against India, Bangladesh head coach Russell Domingo has resigned as the team’s head coach without completing his tenure that was supposed to run till the 2023 World Cup.
Domingo joined as Bangladesh’s head coach in September 2019 after the country’s cricket board sacked Steve Rhodes following the World Cup that year. Under Domingo, Bangladesh won the T20I series against Australia and New Zealand at home, followed by a Test win in New Zealand, an ODI series triumph in South Africa and at home against India.
While the sudden decision appears to be surprising, the BCB’s cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus had given hints that the BCB were ready to move on from Domingo. Right after the hosts had lost the Dhaka Test to get clean swept from India, Yunus said the board is looking for a new coach, and fans will see quite a few changes.
“We need a coach who has an impact and influence on the team. You will soon see some changes. We are trying. We want a very strong team that can play quality and highly competitive team. We went close to beating India, but it is tough to beat this team. We beat England and Australia in this ground, but India is a tougher side in these conditions,” Yunus told reporters right after the completion of the Dhaka Test.
“In the mainstream, motivation is important. We don’t just want a good coach, but he has to be a mentor. There’s less scope to teach them skills at this level, but the coach needs to review performances with the players after a series,” he had added.
Overall, Bangladesh played 22 Tests under Domingo, winning only three and facing 17 defeats while two games had no result. Likewise, the Tigers won 21 ODIs and lost 9 matches out of a total of 30 50-over games. When it comes to T20Is, Bangladesh played 59 games under Domingo, where they won 23 and lost 35, while one had no result.
