Ravichandran Ashwin (42 not out) and Shreyas Iyer (29 not out) added an unbeaten 71-run partnership for the eighth wicket that helped India register a thrilling victory against Bangladesh in the second and final Test match of the series.

India resumed Day 4 on 45/4, needing 100 more runs to win in Dhaka and a series sweep (2-0). Early in the day, Bangladesh skipper and left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan trapped Jaydev Unadkat in front, sending the Indian batter back to pavilion for 13. Wickets continued to fall as the touring part lost two more wickets – Rishabh Pant (9) and overnight batter Axar Patel (34) – in quick succession. Both Pant and Patel were dismissed by Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who claimed a five-for in the second innings.

The next two batters – Iyer and Ashwin – batted with caution and just kept rotating the strike before settling in nicely. The duo started batting aggressively only when the required number of runs came under 50. At that stage, it looked like India’s game and it eventually turned out to be one.

The eighth wicket stand was India’s second highest in Test cricket in the fourth innings, and it ensured that India moved up to second pace in the 2021-23 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) table.

India’s next WTC assignment is against Australia, a four-match series at home in February-March 2023.
