Hours after the photos and videos of Portugal striker and star footballer Cristiano Ronaldo crying on the field and inside the tunnel went viral, former India cricket team captain Virat Kohli took to Twitter to share an elaborate post on Ronaldo, hailing him as the “greatest of all time.”

Portugal were knocked out of FIFA World Cup 2022 after losing (0-1) to Morocco in the quarter-final on Saturday. Morocco forward Youssef En-Nesyri scored a goal in the 42nd minute which proved to be the winning one as Portugal were unable to equalise in the match. With this defeat, Ronaldo’s chance to win a World Cup title came to an end as the ongoing showpiece tournament may be his last. The next time FIFA World Cup will take place in the USA in 2026, and by then Ronaldo would turn 41.

“No trophy or any title can take anything away from what you’ve done in this sport and for sports fans around the world. No title can explain the impact you’ve had on people and what I and so many around the world feel when we watch you play. That’s a gift from god,” wrote Kohli in his Twitter post.

“A real blessing to a man who plays his heart out every single time and is the epitome of hard work and dedication and a true inspiration for any sportsperson. You are for me the greatest of all time,” he added.

While Ronaldo has two major trophies to show as a Portugal captain – the Euro Cup and Nations League – Kohli gave up Team India captaincy without a trophy to his name. Having led the Men in Blue in four ICC events, his side’s best show was finishing runners-up in the World Test Championship 2019-21.
