Ace Sri Lankan spinner Wanindu Hasaranga added another feather to his illustrious cap after picking up the first-ever hat-trick in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) on Tuesday.

In the match between Colombo Stars vs Kandy Falcons at the ongoing 2022 edition of LPL, Hasaranga, the captain of Kandy, led the side from the front and accomplished the milestone during the seventh over of the Stars’ innings.

The star leg-spinner first went through the defences of Dinesh Chandimal on the third delivery and followed it up with back-to-back dismissals in the next two balls in the form of Benny Howell and Seekkuge Prasanna to complete his hat-trick.

Here is how the hat-trick took place:

  • 6.3: Hasaranga to CHandimal, a googly pitched at a good length, which Chandimal couldn’t pick the ball, pierced the gap to shatter the stumps.
  • 6.4: Hasaranga to Howell, the batter danced down the track to flick the ball on the on-side but missed the line and got trapped in front.
  • 6.5: Hasaranga to Prasanna, another googly and the batter again played down the wrong line and dismissed the leg before.

Hasaranga finished the proceedings with four wickets in three overs while conceding only 14 runs. Riding on Hasaranga’s sensational bowling, the Colombo Stars were bundled out for just 90 in 14.3 overs.

Earlier, Kandy posted a humungous 199/1 on the board in their allotted 20 overs, thanks to brilliant knocks by Andre Fletcher and Pathum Nissanka. The duo added 156 runs for the opening wicket and completely dominated the game. While Nissanka scored a brilliant 71 off 41 deliveries, Fletcher went on to smash a remarkable hundred, scoring an unbeaten 102 from 67 balls, including 11 fours and three sixes.

“Credit to our batters. My second T20 hat-trick. I am really happy. That’s what experience does. First two wickets, I tried to bowl at the sticks and decided to bowl the googly. I am trying to take more responsibility as a captain. I always try to do my best whether I am a captain or not,” said Hasaranga after the game.
