The inaugural season of SA20 just got underway when MI Cape Town and Paarl Royals faced each other in the tournament opener on Tuesday (January 10).
Put in to bat first, Paarl Royals set a fighting total of 142 for the loss of seven wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Opener Jos Buttler 51 (42) and skipper David Miller 42 (31) were the main contributors for the Royals.
Making a comeback on the cricketing field after a long time, Jofra Archer took three wickets for Cape Town and gave away just 27 runs in his four overs quota.
With the help of Dewald Brewis‘ quickfire 70 off 41 and Ryan Rickelton‘s 42 (33), Rashid Khan-led Cape Town easily chased the set target in 15.3 overs with eight wickets remaining.
The opening pair of Brevis and Rickelton built a 90-run partnership stand until the latter got cleaned up by Ramon Simmonds. The only other bowler to get a wicket for the Royals was Codi Yusuf.
Brevis hit seven boundaries (5 sixes and 4 fours) in his match-winning inning and was also awarded the Man of the Match prize for his unbeaten 70.
During his fiery knock, Baby AB (as fans often acknowledge Brevis) smashed a massive no-look six off Ferisco Adams in the 10th over, leaving everyone amazed.

Brevis thanked God and praised AB de Villiers for the guidance while discussing his inning in the post-match presentation.
“Firstly, thanks to the crowd for the great support. Brilliant atmosphere, really enjoyed batting. I want to also thank God, it is wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be here. My relationship with AB is very special. He’s played a key role in my development and gives me right advice all the time,” said Brewis in the post-match presentation
When asked about Brevis’ knock, Royals skipper Miller said, “At the back end, it was really good to watch. Really big talent, wish him all the best.”
