In the opening match of the just-started SA20 2023, MI Cape Town defeated Paarl Royals by eight wickets at Newlands stadium on Tuesday.

Put to bat first, the Royals, led by David Miller, posted 142/7 in their assigned 20 overs. Captain Miller smashed a crucial 42 down the order after Jos Buttler‘s remarkable half-century. The England superstar scored 51 from 42 deliveries, with the help of seven boundaries, including a six.

For MI, Jofra Archer, who was playing his first competitive match since getting sidelined due to an elbow injury, shined in his comeback game. Archer conceded only 27 runs in his quota of 4 overs, including a maiden and picked up three wickets.

In response, the Rashid Khan-led MI chased down the paltry target inside 16 overs, thanks to a blistering knock by Dewald Brevis. The ‘Baby AB’ demolished Paarl bowlers right from the word go, smacking five humungous sixes and 4 fours during his unbeaten knock of 70 runs from just 41 deliveries.

Brevis killed the chase with an explosive start and a 90-run opening stand to script a comfortable eight-wicket triumph and also helped his side secure a bonus point.

“Firstly, thanks to the crowd for the great support. Brilliant atmosphere, really enjoyed batting. I want to also thank God, it is wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here. My relationship with AB is very special. He’s played a key role in my development and gives me the right advice all the time,” said Brevis after bagging Player of the Match in the post-match presentation.
