Team India defeated Sri Lanka in the second One-Day International (ODI) by four wickets at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday. The victory also helped the Men in Blue clinch the three-match series and took an unassailable lead of 2-0.

Chasing 216, India were in a spot of bother after losing their top four batters for 86 inside 15 overs. Before the visitors could add more pressure, KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya joined hands to bail the hosts out of trouble.

Rahul and Hardik formed a game-changing partnership of 75 runs for the fifth wicket which helped India’s comeback in the contest. While Hardik was dismissed for 36, Rahul stayed till the end and took his side over the finish line with an unbeaten 64 off 103 balls, including six boundaries.

Earlier, Indian bowlers took full control of the proceedings and kept taking wickets at regular intervals to restrict the Lankans to a below-par score. Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav were the wrecker-in-chiefs with three wickets each. Siraj bagged a three-wicket haul for 30 runs in 5.4 overs. Similarly, Kuldeep picked up three scalps while conceding 51 runs in his quota of 10 overs.

For the touring party, debutant Nuwanidu Fernando shined with the bat, smashing a much-important half-century at the top. Fernando smashed 51 off 63 balls with the help of six boundaries. Apart from the opener, tailender Dunith Wellalage chipped in with a valuable 32 to take his team’s total beyond 200.
