Australia opener David Warner will miss the remaining tour of India after taking a blow on the head and broken elbow in the second Test. The left-handed batter has been ruled out of the last two Tests against India in Indore and Ahmedabad.
There are high chances he won’t return to play the three-match ODI series, scheduled after the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Warner’s current run of form was also a matter of concern for the Aussies, with the usually prolific run-scorer having failed in all three innings on this tour of India and with just one century to his name since the start of 2020.
Australia are unlikely to call in a replacement player for Warner, with Cameron Green set to return from a finger injury to bat at No. 6 in the third Test.
Earlier, head coach Andrew McDonald confirmed that Travis Head would stay on as an opener if Warner does not recover from his injury.
Head scored a brisk 43 in the second innings of the recently-concluded Delhi Test.
“If Dave’s unavailable it would make perfect sense,” McDonald said of opening the innings with Head.
“We did discuss before coming over here that if we were to lose an opening batter that Trav would be one we’d look to put up there. We feel in the subcontinental conditions that he can get off to the fast starts which he showed.”
The tourists, who are already 2-0 down in the ongoing four-match Test series, will also miss the services of their star pacer Josh Hazlewood due to Achilles tendonitis.
