Australia have added left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann to their squad for the remaining Tests of the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Kuhnemann will replace his Queensland colleague Mitchell Swepson, who has headed home to attend the birth of his child. Swepson was not picked in Australia’s playing XI for the first Test which India won by a massive margin and took 1-0 lead in the four-match series.
Addition of Kuhnemann to the squad will bolster the Aussies. He is currently playing the Marsh Sheffield Shield where he recently claimed 2-55 off 21 overs and 1-67 off 23 overs at the MCG.
Kuhnemann has not played a Test so far for Australia but has featured in four ODIs after making his debut in June 2022.
Meanwhile, the tourists are hoping that all-rounder Cameron Green is deemed fit for the second Test and can slot in an extra spinner alongside Nathan Lyon and Todd Murphy.
Green suffered an injury in his right index finger during the Boxing Day Test against South Africa and was only given clearance to return to training by his doctor last week after the surgery.
Left-handed Matthew Renshaw is also carrying a knee injury, meaning Pat Cummins & Co. will be sweating even harder on Green’s availability to bat in the middle order.
Australia’s updated Test squad:
Pat Cummins (captain), Ashton Agar, Scott Boland, Alex Carey (wicket-keeper), Cameron Green, Peter Handscomb, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Matt Kuhnemann, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Lance Morris, Todd Murphy, Matthew Renshaw, Steve Smith (vice-captain), Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Swepson, David Warner.
