Day 1 of the second Test between India and Australia has come to an end, with both teams putting up a good show. The hosts are currently batting on 21 and will resume the play tomorrow.

Deciding to bat first, Australia got off to a decent start but failed to carry the momentum and were bowled out for 263. Usman Khawaja played exceptionally well and scored a fighting 81 runs for his team, with Peter Handscomb also scoring an unbeaten 72. Apart from Khawaja and Handscomb, no other Aussie batter crossed the half-century mark. However, Australian skipper Pat Cummins played a crucial cameo of 33 runs for his side.

On the other hand, Mohammed Shami was the pick of the Indian bowlers as he scalped four wickets in the first innings. Meanwhile, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja also picked three wickets each.

Among the three wickets which Ashwin has taken, two came in a single over when he dismissed Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith off magnificent deliveries.

In reply, coming on to bat in the evening, India succeeded in guarding their wickets and ended the day with both their openers still on the crease. Rohit Sharma (13) and KL Rahul (4) put up a resilient show with the bat and faced nine overs without falling victim to the Aussies.

Well, there was a moment in the second innings when the on-field umpire declared Rohit out, but the India skipper straight-away reviewed the call, and the TV umpire soon overturned the decision.

While India would be happy with their performance on the opening day of the second Test, Australia will need to sweat hard and come up with something new to turn the game in their favour. Notably, Australia are already 0-1 down in the four-match series.
