As the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) draws near, fans are eagerly anticipating the opening match of the tournament. The reigning champions, Gujarat Titans (GT), will begin their title defence against the four-time winners Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Friday, March 31. Last year, GT won the title in their debut season after defeating Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the final.
As anticipation builds ahead of the new season, former England captain Michael Vaughan has made a bold prediction about the winner of IPL 2023. Vaughan has thrown his support behind the Sanju Samson-led RR, who narrowly missed out on the title last year. RR have not won the IPL since its inaugural season, when spin wizard Shane Warne led them to victory.
“Can’t wait for the IPL to start .. Looking forward to being part of the @cricbuzz team .. I thinks it’s going to be @rajasthanroyals year .. they will be lifting the trophy in late May,” tweeted Vaughan.

RR will begin their IPL 2023 campaign on April 2, in Hyderabad, where they will face Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). In the auction held last year, RR secured the services of West Indies star all-rounder Jason Holder for INR 5.75 crore and also bought Australia leg-spinner Adam Zampa for INR 1.5 crore. Additionally, England’s Joe Root will make his IPL debut after being purchased at his base price of INR 2 crore.
Despite RR’s impressive squad, the competition is expected to be fierce this season, with all eight teams vying for the coveted IPL trophy. GT will be looking to defend their title and become the first team since Mumbai Indians (MI) to win consecutive IPL championships. Meanwhile, CSK will be aiming to win their fifth title after a disappointing season last year, which saw them miss out on the playoffs.
