Indian great Virat Kohli broke a more than three-year-long century drought in Test cricket after he brought up his 28th Test ton on Day 4 of the ongoing fourth Test against Australia at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Kohli cruised his way to a 241-ball hundred and played the anchor role as the rest of Indian batting revolved around him. The former India skipper was looking well set to reach the double hundred, but he kept running out of partners and eventually fell holing out to deep midwicket for 186 runs off 364 deliveries, including 15 fours.

Kohli’s impressive knock gave India a 91-run first-innings lead against the Aussies as India were bundled out for 571 in 178.5 overs. Kohli was well supported by Axar Patel, who went on to smash 79 runs off 113 balls with the help of five fours and four maximums.

Australia have scored 3/0 at the stumps on the fourth day, trailing India by 88 runs. However, the visitors could have been one down had KS Bharat not missed the opportunity in the fifth over, bowled by Ravichandran Ashwin.

Brief Scores:

Australia 480 (Usman Khawaja 180, Cameron Green 114; Ravichandran Ashwin 6/91) and 3/0 trail India 571 (Virat Kohli 186, Shubman Gill 128, Axar Patel 79; Todd Murphy 3/113) by 88 runs.

“I am feeling good to have contributed with the bat. I’ve had the confidence to go after ones that I can hit, the talk in the 1st Test is what I’m following and I’m gaining a bit of information about my ability with the bat. I had no set role (when asked if he was told to score quickly), just wanted to make as many runs as possible, bat along with the ball not doing a lot. One you’re set, it’s easier to bat, the odd ball is turning and staying low, it’s slightly difficult when you’re new to the crease, but once you adjust, it’s still easy to bat on this wicket,” said Axar after the end of day’s play.
