The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering imposing a ‘shadow ban’ on players from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh for the upcoming auctions. This comes as players from these two countries are set to miss the initial matches of IPL 2023 due to their national team commitments. Sri Lanka is currently participating in a white-ball series against New Zealand, while Bangladesh players are arriving late in India due to their ongoing home series against Ireland. This has caused frustration for the BCCI and IPL franchises.
In addition to missing the start of IPL 2023, Bangladesh players may also be unavailable for the three-match ODI series against Ireland from May 9 to 14, as they have to travel to England for the series. This has further irked the BCCI and the franchises who are now almost set to impose a shadow ban on players from these countries. It is reported that the BCCI is particularly unhappy with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) for not releasing their players’ NOCs (No Objection Certificates) in a timely manner.
The BCCI and the franchises are said to be fuming over the behaviour of the BCB and are of the opinion that players should not register if they are unable to fulfil their IPL commitments. This is likely to make the franchises hesitant to select players from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in the future. The 2023 season of IPL will begin on Friday (March 31), with the first match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Gujarat Giants (GT), but it remains to be seen how the situation with the Bangladesh and Sri Lanka players will develop over the course of the tournament.
