The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a highly anticipated event for cricket fans around the world. The 16th edition of the IPL started with a grand opening ceremony at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday, March 31.
The gala event was a star-studded affair with popular celebrities such as Arjit Singh, Tamannah Bhatia and Rashmika Mandanna captivating the crowd with their dazzling performances. The opening ceremony set the tone for what was to come, as fans eagerly awaited the start of the first match.
In the opening match of IPL 2023, Gujarat Titans (GT) skipper Hardik Pandya won the toss and opted to bowl first against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). CSK was looking to settle into the game, but GT fast bowler Mohammed Shami had other plans. He took the first wicket of the season by send CSK opener Devon Conway back to the dugout early. The CSK opener could manage only one run in six balls. This was a significant moment for Shami, as it was his 100th wicket in the IPL.
Despite losing an early wicket, another opener Ruturak Gaikwad and No. 3 Moeen Ali helped CSK dominate the powerplay. The English all-rounder fell to Rashid Khan in the last over of the powerplay, but Gaikwad continued to bat well. The partnership between Gaikwad and Ali was crucial in helping CSK build a solid foundation for their innings.
Gaikwad eventually got out after scoring a 50-ball 92 with the help of 5 fours and 9 sixes.
