UP Warriorz registered their second win of the ongoing Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 after they defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Match 8 at Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Friday. Warriorz recorded a dominating 10-wicket victory after captain Alyssa Healy and her opening partner Devika Vaidya chased down the target of 139 in just 13 overs.
Healy showcased her ‘A Game’ taking RCB bowlers to the cleaners, hitting 18 fours and a six during her unbelievable knock. The Aussie star went on to score 96 from just 47 deliveries, at an astonishing strike rate of 204.26. Despite her splendid knock, Healy credited the spinners behind Warriorz’s remarkable performance.
Notably, England’s ace spinner Sophie Ecclestone (4/13) and Indian star Deepti Sharma (3/26) bagged three wickets each, helping the Warriorz bowl out RCB for 138 despite a fighting half-century (52 off 39) by Ellyse Perry.
“Really pleased with our bowlers tonight to keep them under 200. Full credit to the spinners as they held their nerve and took wickets at crucial times. It was a spin to win tonight. It was a good batting wicket, and the spinners did a fine job,” said Healy at the post-match presentation.
Healy was very well supported by Devika, who was sent as an opener instead of Shweta. The UP skipper also revealed the reason behind the move, stating she was impressed by Devika’s performance in the series against the Aussies.
“Shweta is only a baby, and coming into such a competition is difficult. We watched Vaidya in the recent series (against India) and wondered what she was doing at number 7, she played a fine knock and took the pressure off me. We just set the platform early, and by the timeout, we needed run a ball to win, we didn’t want to drag it too long,” added Healy.
