Australia captain Meg Lanning is all ready to lead the Delhi Capitals (DC) franchise in the upcoming inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) that starts on March 4 in Mumbai.

Lanning has a sensational captaincy record in the shortest format. Under her leadership, Australia have won a record four T20 World Cups, including the most recent one in South Africa last month after they defeated the hosts in the summit clash.

Lanning, who has already arrived in Mumbai for the WPL, has played 132 T20Is, in which she has scored 3405 runs with the help of two hundreds and 15 half-centuries at an average of 36.61 and strike rate of 116.37. The Singapore-born-Aussie star has led her team in 100 T20Is, which is the most by any women’s player in the format.

Notably, the Capitals will begin their WPL campaign on March 5 against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Brabourne Stadium. Along with Lanning, India star Jemimah Rodrigues was named as the vice-captain of Capitals.

“It’s a very proud moment for me, firstly to be involved with Delhi Capitals and then to lead them. It’s about enjoying yourself, and getting the best out of yourself. WPL is a massive moment for the sport, it’s the logical next step and makes a lot of sense. Cricket in India is people’s lives, and the fact that WPL is up and running, and to be involved in something like this, is amazing. It’s only going to grow in the coming years,” said Lanning in an official statement.

Not to mention, Lanning is the third Australian player to lead a WPL side. Before her, Beth Mooney was named Gujarat Giants’ captain, while Alyssa Healy was appointed UP Warriorz’ skipper. When it comes to other sides, Mumbai Indians will be captained by Harmanpreet Kaur, and Royal Challengers Bangalore will be led by Smriti Mandhana.
