In the fifth match of the ongoing Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023, Delhi Capitals defeated UP Warriorz at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai on Tuesday, March 7.
Put to bat first, the Capitals got off to a good start, with opener Shafali Verma and captain Meg Lanning adding 67 runs. Shafali was dismissed for 17, but Lanning kept her end alive and continued the beating. The DC skipper played an incredible innings of 70 runs from just 42 deliveries with the help of 10 fours and three sixes.
Jess Jonassen also chipped in with a crucial 42 off just 20 balls, laced up with three fours and as many sixes. The Capitals eventually finished with a formidable total of 211/4 in their 20 overs.
In response, the Warriorz could only manage to reach 169/5, losing the contest by 42 runs. Despite wickets falling from one end, Tahlia McGrath kept the fight alive for the Warriorz with a stunning unbeaten knock of 90 from 50 balls, including 11 fours and four sixes.
However, McGrath didn’t get much support from the other end, and UP fell short of the target by 42 runs. Jonassen, who shined with the bat, was the pick of the bowlers for Capitals, bagging a three-wicket haul for 43 runs.
“Tonight it was probably Jess the batter. Went for a few runs at the end (with the ball). I love batting. Nice that it came off tonight. The wicket was incredible. She definitely hits me for quite a few sixes in the nets (Healy). Happy to get one over her. Always an enjoyable competition when we come up against one another,” said Jonassen after bagging ‘Player of the Match’ award.

"Just pick Jonassen & do whatever you want with the rest of the squad."@wvraman on what Meg Lanning must have asked for as Delhi Capitals captain
Sounds like a legit request#WPL2023

Jess Jonassen bringing in the madness you would associate with the Brisbane Heat.

What a partnership between Jemimah Rodrigues and Jess Jonassen.
That was brilliantly done as Delhi Capitals put another big score.
UP Warriorz needs to chase the hell out of this one.#WPL #WPL2023
