On Tuesday (March 21), Delhi Capitals (DC) became the first team of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 to reach the final of the inaugural tournament as they defeated UP Warriorz (UPW) in the final league stage match by five wickets and finished as the table toppers of WPL 2023.

Delhi performed exceptionally well throughout the maiden event and will now face the winner of Eliminator on Sunday (March 26) at the Brabourne Stadium. Notably, the eliminator of WPL 2023 will be played between Mumbai Indians (MI) and UPW at the DY Patil Sports Academy on Friday.

It was under the leadership of Australian star Meg Lanning that DC won six of the eight matches in the tournament and sealed the final spot. Lanning not just captained the side but led them from the front and is currently the highest run scorer in the WPL 2023 with 310 runs in the league so far. Although Mumbai also won six games, they finished behind Delhi at the second spot in team rankings because their net run rate was less than the Delhi-based franchise.

Apart from Lanning, Marizanne Kape also played a significant role in DC’s qualification with her all-round performance as she scalped nine wickets and amassed 159 runs.

After becoming the first team to reach the finals, all the DC teammates and management celebrated the achievement in style by cutting a cake and grooving on a song. Jemimah Rodrigues seemed the most thrilled among all as she first sliced the cake and then hummed, “congratulations and celebrations..”. The team staff also chipped in and enjoyed the moment.

Jemimah was even spotted smashing the cake on her fellow team players’ faces during the celebration and then posed for a picture as well.
