On Friday morning, Twitter users noticed a significant change in the profiles of three Indian cricketing stars: Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma. The verified Blue Ticks that were earlier assigned to these profiles had disappeared. This change is due to Twitter’s new verification guidelines, which require users to pay for verification instead of being verified based on Twitter’s criteria.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, had announced that the only way to keep the verified Blue Tick Mark on profiles is to subscribe to Twitter Blue. However, Kohli, Dhoni and Sharma, along with several other Twitter users, have not yet subscribed to the paid service.

What is Twitter Blue?

Twitter Blue is a paid subscription service that offers a verified checkmark on users’ profiles, among other benefits. It is available on iOS and Android devices as well as Twitter’s website. The subscription fee in India is Rs 900 per month for iOS and Android users, Rs 650 per month for web users, and Rs 6,800 for an annual plan that is only available on the web. The checkmark was previously given only to verified accounts of famous personalities, politicians, journalists, and public figures.

Twitter Blue subscribers have access to early features like editing tweets, creating bookmark folders, customising app icons and NFT profile pictures, and selecting different colour themes for their app. They can also prioritise their replies on tweets and undo tweets before they are visible to other users. Twitter Blue subscribers have a character limit of 4,000, and can upload videos up to 60 minutes or with a size of up to 2 GB, whereas other users are limited to 280 characters.

In the US, Twitter Blue costs $11 per month on Android and iOS devices and $8 on the web. The annual plan costs $84 in the US. The introduction of Twitter Blue now enables anyone to buy the verified checkmark by paying the subscription fee.
