The over-rate is becoming a matter of concern in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, with quite a few matches extending beyond the four-hour duration.
A similar instance was seen during the recently concluded nail biting thriller between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) at MA Chidambaram stadium on Wednesday.
Sanju Samson, the captain of Royals, was found guilty of maintaining the slowover rate and hence faced penalty with a fine of INR 12 lakh.
“Rajasthan Royals have been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during their TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match 17 against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai on Wednesday,” read an IPL media release.
“As it was the team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, captain Sanju Samson was fined Rs 12 lakhs,” the release added.
Speaking about the match, the Royals snatched a dramatic win over Chennai, thanks to Sandeep Sharma‘s outstanding performance in the final over. Despite getting hit for two sixes, the right-armer kept his nerve and prevented MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja from leading their team to victory as CSK managed to reach 172/6 in reply to Rajasthan’s 175/8.
Earlier, the inuaugral IPL winners made a competitive total, with Jos Buttler contributing 52 off 36 balls, including three sixes and a four. Buttler and Devdutt Padikkal (38 off 26 balls) put on a partnership of 77 for the second wicket. Ravichandran Ashwin and Shimron Hetmyer also made valuable contributions, scoring 30 off 22 balls and 30 off 18 balls, respectively.
Star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of the Super Kings’ bowlers, taking 2/21. Similarly, Akash Singh and Tushar Deshpande also bagged two wickets each.
