In the third match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) took on Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow and registered a 50-run victory.
Asked to bat first, LSG set a formidable total of 193 runs for the loss of six wickets in their 20 overs. Kyle Mayers was the top scorer for the Lucknow-based team, smashing 73 runs off just 38 balls, including seven sixes. Nicholas Pooran and Ayush Badoni also contributed with the bat, scoring 36 and 18 runs, respectively. Meanwhile, Chetan Sakariya and Khaleel Ahmed were the pick of the bowlers for DC and picked up two wickets each. However, the important wicket of Mayers was bagged by Axar Patel.
On the third ball of the 12th over, Axar bowled an absolute ripper to clean up Mayers. The left-handed LSG batter tried to cut the outside-off delivery by the 29-year-old spinner, but the white leather turned sharply and crashed direct into the stumps. Even the DC wicketkeeper didn’t anticipate the ball to turn that much as he was initially seen moving towards his left. While Mayers was spotted shell-shocked after the dismissal, Axar celebrated the wicket with a roar.

Talking about the result of the match, Delhi struggled to chase the target and were restricted to 143/9 in their 20 overs. David Warner was the only player to score a half-century for his team, making 56 runs off 48 balls. Rilee Rossouw also scored handy 30 runs for his team, but that wasn’t enough to get DC across the line.
On the other hand, Mark Wood was the star performer for LSG with five wickets in his quota of four overs. Avesh Khan also grabbed two scalps for his side and helped Lucknow register a comprehensive 50-run victory over DC. Wood was adjudged the ‘Player of the Match’ for his exceptional bowling performance.
