Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) in a clinical 6-wicket victory at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, helping them secure two crucial points and move up to the second spot in the IPL 2023 standings.
Devon Conway once again top-scored for CSK with 44, while Ruturaj Gaikwad played an impressive innings of 30 off just 16 balls, laying the foundation for the chase of Mumbai’s 140 runs. This was CSK’s first win over MI at home in over 4,777 days and only the second time since 2014 that they registered two league stage wins over the visitors.
MI, on the other hand, suffered a major setback, remaining at the sixth place in the points-table. Chennai left Mumbai struggling in the powerplay itself, with a brilliant performance from the bowlers. Chahar dealt a double blow in the third over, getting the wickets of Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma. Suryakumar Yadav and Wadhera steadied the innings, hitting five boundaries from overs 5-8, but the 55-run partnership came to an end in the 11th over when Yadav was caught by Jadeja.
Wadhera played a brilliant innings, reaching his maiden IPL fifty in 46 balls, and slog-sweeping, pulling and sweeping the left-arm spinner for three boundaries. However, he was dismissed for 64 in the 18th over by Matheesha Pathirana, who bowled a fiery 145kph yorker. Mumbai failed to get the desired finishing flourish, as only five runs were scored in the final over.
Chasing 140, Gaikwad played an aggressive innings, hitting Cameron Green for two fours in the first over and then effortlessly pulling twice for sixes in the third over. Conway got up and running with a leg glance off Jofra Archer for a boundary in the fourth over. Piyush Chawla got the wicket of Gaikwad in the fifth over, but Ajinkya Rahane and Conway continued the chase.
Ambati Rayudu and Conway resorted to strike-rotation until Rayudu smashed a six off part-time spin of Tristan Stubbs, but was dismissed on the next ball. Shivam Dube added impetus to the chase with two sixes in the 14th over, and though Conway was dismissed lbw by Akash Madhwal, MS Dhoni finished off the chase with an easy single. CSK won the match with 14 balls to spare.
