India’s and Gujarat Titan‘s (GT) star opener Shubman Gill is in the form of his life and is scoring the bulk of runs across formats. Gill currently leads the list of leading run-scorers in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 and has so far hammered four tons in the event.
It is also worth mentioning that Gill has not only impressed in IPL but has showcased his talent at the international level as well. While he scored his maiden set of hundreds in Tests and T20I cricket for India before the commencement of IPL 2023, he became just the fourth Indian to smash a double ton in ODIs.
The right-handed batter’s sensational performance has earned him many praises and accolades. He has even attracted comparisons to some legendary Indian cricketers due to his brilliant strokeplay ability and consistency. Notably, many cricket enthusiasts now see Gill reaching the level of all-time great Sachin Tendulkar and modern-day legends like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the near future. However, Gill personally believes that it isn’t possible for anyone to match the legacy of such personalities.
Speaking to the ANI, the 23-year-old GT cricketer said that players like Sachin, Virat and Rohit are the inspiration behind many and that they only inspired millions of kids like him to pursue cricket. Gill even gave a special mention of India’s 1983 and 2011 world cup triumphs to convey his point.
“The generation that all of these people – Sachin sir (Tendulkar) sir, Virat (Kohli) bhai, Rohit Sharma – have inspired is beyond. Had we not won the ’83 World Cup, had there been a Sachin Tendulkar? No. Had we not won the 2011 World Cup, would I be as inspired? Maybe, maybe not. These kinds of legacies are immortal, you can’t really define them,” said Gill.
