England’s loss against Australia in the first Ashes 2023 Test at Edgbaston on Tuesday (June 20) left many fans heartbroken. Among all, the former England captain Alastair Cook was also visibly frustrated with the host’s defeat. The video of the same has now gone viral on the internet.

Cook’s distressed reaction came while he was commentating for BBC Sport and after the match-winning stroke by Aussie skipper Pat Cummins. The veteran England batter was caught holding his head for a moment and then shaking it in disappointment following the four off Ollie Robinson’s delivery. He even didn’t speak a word and seemed surprised by the loss.

Here’s the video:

It is worth mentioning that Cook finished his Test career as England’s leading run scorer in the format. He amassed 12,472 at an impressive average of 45.35, comprising 33 centuries and 57 fifties. Notably, 2493 of those runs scored by Cook came against Australia in the prestigious Ashes series with the highest score of an unbeaten 244.

Speaking of the final day of the match, England were initially in dominating position on Day 5 of the Edgbaston Test as they needed just two wickets with 54 runs still to defend at one point. However, the unbreakable 55-run partnership between Cummins and Nathan Lyon eventually went on to cost England the game. Cummins played a resilient 44-run innings for the Australian side, while Lyon chipped in with crucial 16 runs.

The defeat also brought back the ‘Bazball’ approach of England into question. Nevertheless, current England captain Ben Stokes clarified that his team is proud of the way they played and will continue to carry the same approach in the upcoming matches as well.

Following the loss, England are now lagging behind (0-1) in the five-match Ashes 2023 series and will next face the visitors from June 28 in the second game scheduled at the Lord’s cricket ground in London.
