One of cricket’s most intense rivalries is about to reignite as England and Australia gear up for the Ashes series, set to commence on Friday (June 16). The Pat Cummins-led Australia recently won the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023 final against India. They now will be aiming to continue their winning streak by overpowering England, who recently dominated Ireland in a one-off Test match.
England’s Test cricket has seen a transformation since all-rounder Ben Stokes took over the captaincy from Joe Root. Under the leadership of Stokes and New Zealand coach Brendon McCullum, the team has exhibited an exciting and aggressive brand of cricket. England have enjoyed consistent performances since 2022, including an away victory over Pakistan in December of that year. The batsmen have embraced a fearless and attacking style of play, often referred to as ‘Bazball.’
‘Baz’ refers to the nickname of coach McCullum, who was known for his aggressive batting approach and ability to decimate bowlers during his playing days. McCullum’s international career was marked by numerous records, including one of the fastest centuries in the history of the game.
England’s formidable pace attack, featuring the likes of Stuart Broad and James Anderson will add strength to their lineup. With over 1000 Test wickets between them, Broad and Anderson will once again aim to hunt in pair and pose a significant threat to the Australian batters.
England’s last Ashes victory came in 2015, and they will be eager to reclaim the prestigious urn after an eight-year drought.
Former Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath, while appreciating England’s attacking approach, has made a bold prediction for the Ashes series. McGrath, who is regarded as one of the greatest pacemen of all-time, anticipates a comprehensive 5-0 victory in favour of Australia.
McGrath believes Australia’s confidence will be high after their WTC final triumph and the familiarity they gained with the English conditions.
“The WTC was the perfect lead-up to Australia in the Ashes, giving them great confidence and conditions to play in. So, I think they’re in a good spot. Bazball is talked about a lot in England and I’m a big fan of it. I like to back myself, go out there and be positive, go out in the fourth innings, and play my shots, it’s an aggressive mindset, and If you can dominate the bowlers, you can score quick runs and put pressure on them. my prediction is 5-0,” McGrath was quoted as saying to Daily Mail.
The first Test of the five-match Ashes 2023 series will kick off on June 16 at Edgbaston in Birmingham, with the series culminating at the Kennington Oval on July 27.
