In a remarkable display of dominance, Bangladesh recorded their biggest victory margin in Test cricket, defeating Afghanistan by staggering 546 runs in the one-off Test match. Taskin Ahmed‘s exceptional four-wicket haul and Najmul Hossain‘s twin tons played pivotal roles in Bangladesh’s historic triumph.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Bangladesh lost an early wicket but recovered quickly from a jolt, thanks to a magnificent 212-run partnership between Shanto and Mahmudul Hasan Joy. Shanto, in particular, was in sublime form, scoring a splendid 146 from just 175 balls. However, Afghanistan’s Nijat Masood impressed with a five-wicket haul, causing regular breakthroughs as Bangladesh were eventually bowled out for 382 runs.
In response, Afghanistan struggled from the start, losing four wickets quickly. Nasir Jamal and Afsar Zazai fought valiantly, forming a 65-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Nevertheless, their resistance was short-lived as Mehidy Hasan Miraz dismissed Jamal for 35 runs, triggering a collapse that saw Afghanistan bundled out for a mere 146 runs. Hossain stood out with four wickets, while Shoriful Islam, Taijul Islam, and Miraz contributed with two wickets each.
After dominating the first innings and securing a substantial lead, Bangladesh further asserted their dominance with a strong batting performance in the second innings. Shanto, who had already notched a century in the first innings, once again showcased his class and composure at the crease. His innings of 124 runs was a testament to his skill and consistency, as he led the charge for Bangladesh.
With an imposing target of 662 runs to chase, Afghanistan’s batting woes continued as they lost wickets early on. Taskin Ahmed struck early, dismissing Ibrahim Zadran on the first ball of the innings. Hashmatullah Shahidi, the Afghan skipper, was forced to retire hurt after being hit on the back of the helmet. By the end of the third day, Afghanistan had reached 45/2, facing a daunting challenge on the fourth day.
Afghanistan’s batting struggles persisted on a penultimate day as Ebadot Hossain trapped Nasir Jamal in front of the wicket, initiating another collapse. The wickets tumbled rapidly, with Karim Janat‘s brief attempt to score quick runs cut short. Eventually, the visitors were bundled out on 115 and faced a massive defeat by 546 runs. With this victory, Litton Das’ men have set a new record for the biggest Test win by runs in the 21st century.
