The domestic cricket calendar for the 2023-24 season in India was announced in April 2023 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The season is set to feature 1846 matches, starting from the final week of June 2023 and running until March 2024.
The Duleep Trophy will kick off the domestic tournament, scheduled to take place from June 28 to July 16 in Bengaluru. The competition will involve six teams representing different zones of India, including North, South, East, West, Central, and North East.
The selectors of South Zone recently gathered to pick the team for the Duleep Trophy 2023. Hanuma Vihari was named the captain, with Mayank Agarwal as the vice-captain. The squad includes notable domestic players such as KS Bharat, Sai Sudharsan, Washington Sundar, and Tilak Varma.
However, one notable omission from the squad was Baba Indrajith, who boasts an average of over 50 in 66 first-class matches. Despite his recent good form, the selectors decided not to include him in the team.
Dinesh Karthik, a veteran wicketkeeper-batter, expressed his disappointment with Indrajith’s exclusion from the South Zone team. Karthik questioned the decision of the selection committee, highlighting that Indrajith had played for Rest of India (ROI) against Madhya Pradesh in March 2023 but was not considered for the South Zone team.
“I don’t understand selection committee these days. Baba Indrajith plays for Rest of India against MP in the first week of March 2023. There has been no first class matches post that, but he doesn’t feature for South Zone in the Duleep Trophy. Can someone tell me why?,” Karthik captioned on Twitter.
