India faced a crushing 209-run defeat against Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023 Final. The Indian batting line-up surrendered against Australian bowlers on Day 5 at The Oval in the summit clash. Lack of application and absent-mindedness around off-stump cost them seven wickets in one and a half sessions of play.

However, worse is yet to be over for Team India players. Star batter Shubman Gill has now been reprimanded for criticising the umpire’s decision on social media and will be fined 15 per cent of his match fee for breaching the Level 1 ICC code of conduct.

“Gill was found to have breached Article 2.7 of the ICC Code of Conduct for players and player support personnel, which relates to ‘public criticism of, or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an international match. Gill too accepted the decision so there was no need for a formal hearing ,” ICC said in a press release.

In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to Shubman’s disciplinary record, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period.

The incident occurred after the fourth day’s play when Gill criticised the umpiring decision on social media for his dismissal in the second innings of the match. In the eighth over, delivered by Scott Boland, the ball struck Shubman’s bat and swiftly travelled towards the slip cordon, where Cameron Green showed remarkable athleticism by diving to his left and grabbed a remarkable one-handed catch. After watching  several replays, TV umpire Richard Kettleborough adjudged that the catch has been taken cleanly. Later in the day, Shubman took to social media to take a dig at umpire’s call.

Apart from Shubman, the entire Team India will forfeit their 100 per cent match fees due to slow over rate, while Australia would also face a penalty of 80 per cent of their match fees.
