India and Australia are all set to face each other in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023 Final that begins from Wednesday (June 7). The battle is scheduled to take place at the Kennington Oval Stadium in London, and both teams have confirmed their squads for the summit clash.
It is worth mentioning that India initially announced their team for the final on April 25, but they were forced to update the list as KL Rahul was ruled out from the event after sustaining an injury in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. While Ishan Kishan was picked as the replacement for Rahul, the team featured three reserve players in the form of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Suryakumar Yadav and Mukesh Kumar. However, Ruturaj pulled himself out from the marquee event due to his wedding and Yashasvi Jaiswal was added in his place.
On the other hand, Australia named their 17-member squad two months prior to the ultimate battle and then went on the cut it down to fifteen on May 28 by picking two players as a backup.
With very few days left for the final now, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has made it clear that any modifications to the team lineup from hereon can only be implemented with the approval of the Event Technical Committee.
Notably, this marks the second iteration of the WTC, which was launched in 2019 to provide significance to the longest format of the game. In the inaugural edition, New Zealand emerged as the champions by defeating India in the final held in Southampton.
Speaking of the WTC Final 2023, it will take place from June 7 -11, and June 12 has been kept as a reserve day in case any time is lost due to unfavourable playing conditions over the originally scheduled five days.
The prize money for the winners is $1.6 million, while the runners-up will get $800,000.
