Pakistan’s young sensation Ayesha Naseem announced an abrupt retirement from cricket, citing religious issues. The 18-year-old’s unexpected call to bid farewell to the game at such a young age has left many in shock. Ayesha reportedly conveyed the information of her retirement to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Thursday (July 20), stating her desire to follow the principles of Islam as the reason behind her sudden decision to step away from cricket.
As far as Ayesha’s international career is concerned, the young star represented Pakistan in 30 T20Is and four ODIs. The top-order batter amassed 369 runs in the shortest format at an average of 18.45. She was also part of the 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup squad of Pakistan and scored unbeaten 43 runs off 25 balls in a match against arch-rivals India. Her aggressive batting style and ability to take on bowlers made her a promising asset for Pakistan’s women’s cricket team.
Ayesha first came to the limelight in 2021 after her consistent performances against Sri Lanka and West Indies. She later even received praise from the legendary Pakistan seamer Wasim Akram for her quickfire knock against Australia in January 2023. Wasim lauded the power-hitter by taking to his Twitter and referring to her as ‘serious talent’.

Speaking of the Pakistan women’s team’s upcoming fixtures, the Women in Green will soon be seen hosting South Africa for white-ball series from September 1. This will be the first time the Proteas Women will travel to Pakistan. The series will feature three T20Is and as many ODIs.
