The Ashes 2023 series has reached a thrilling phase following England’s comeback victory in the third Test. After losing the first two matches, the hosts successfully won the third Test, rekindling hopes of another triumph in the fourth Test, which commences today in Manchester. If England manages to secure a win in this crucial encounter, the five-match series will be leveled at 2-2, setting the stage for a decisive final Test.
In light of these circumstances, England’s skipper, Ben Stokes, has expressed his optimism and stated that a victory in the Manchester Test would firmly establish the ongoing Ashes series as one of the greatest men’s Ashes battles ever witnessed. Stokes conveyed his thoughts while talking to reporters ahead of the Manchester Test, emphasizing the high quality of cricket showcased throughout the series.
“Well, I think if we win this one, and then go into the last game 2-2, then it’l be hard not to say that this has been the best men’s Ashes series in a long time, if probably not the best. So yeah, I think just overall, like, take away Australia and England, just the cricket that has been played has been absolutely brilliant,” said Stokes.
Stokes further expressed his belief that the enjoyment derived from watching the series was not limited to supporters of either Australia or England. The captivating cricket on display, coupled with outstanding individual performances, has captivated audiences worldwide. Stokes accentuated that such enthralling encounters are precisely what sports enthusiasts crave.
“And I think everyone who has watched at the ground or TV in England or TV at home has just really enjoyed the cricket that’s been played. You know, we have seen some special moments on the cricket field. You’ve seen some very special individual performances as well. And guess that’s what you want from sport,” added Stokes.
Notably, both England and Australia have finalized their playing XIs for the Manchester Test. England boasts an impressive track record at this venue, having emerged victorious in 13 out of their last 16 Test matches. However, it is worth noting that the hosts have not won an Ashes Test at Old Trafford since 1981.
