In a thrilling display of fast bowling, England’s Mark Wood left spectators in awe during the third Ashes 2023 Test against Australia, setting a new record for the fastest over bowled in international matches played at Headingley.

Wood’s fiery spell of bowling in the Test match proved to be a game-changer. In just 11.4 overs, he dismantled the Australian batting lineup, claiming five crucial wickets while conceding only 34 runs at an impressive economy rate of 2.91. His victims included Usman Khawaja, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Todd Murphy.

It was during the first over of his spell that Wood achieved the remarkable feat. Clocking in at a lightning-fast speed, Wood unleashed his ferocious bowling prowess. The first ball of the over clocked an impressive 91 mph, setting the tone for what was to come. He cranked up the speed even further on the next two deliveries, reaching 93 mph and 95 mph, respectively. The final three balls of the over maintained a blistering pace, clocking in at 93 mph, 94 mph, and 93 mph.

Following this exceptional over, England Cricket took to Twitter to announce the historic moment. They posted that Wood had bowled the fastest over in terms of speed ever recorded at Headingley, since the records began.

“First time in front of my Mom and Dad”: Wood expressed his joy after a remarkable show

Wood, who had been benched for the first two Tests, delivered a stellar performance with the ball, and he expressed his happiness at being able to deliver for his team on home soil. Speaking to Sky Sports after the day’s play, the fast bowler said: “I haven’t played a Test match in a while, but to be able to come back thoroughly fresh and produce that was pretty special. I was really happy that I could show that on home conditions, I can bowl as well.”

Wood also had a heartfelt moment when he saw his parents in the stands witnessing his exceptional performance.

“Amazing! Great feeling to get five wickets, first time in front of my Mom and Dad. So, that was a lovely moment to see them in the stand. The team is in a good position,” he added.
