From Mitchell Starc’s catch to Jonny Bairstow’s controversial dismissal, the Ashes 2023 has been in the headlines for so many reasons. Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey not paying for a haircut at a barber’s shop in London was also among those bizarre stories that became a major talking point among cricket enthusiasts during the ongoing edition of the Ashes series. However, the allegations turned out to be false as Carey’s compatriot Steve Smith and Cricket Australia (CA) officially came forward to denounce any such claims.
It is worth mentioning that many English tabloids and media houses had published the story of Carey owing £30 to a barber in London. The controversy even saw former England captain Alastair Cook jump and narrate the whole story involving the Aussie wicketkeeper on BBC Test Match Special during the first day of the Headingley Test match.
Star Aussie batter Smith was quick to rubbish the claims of Cook and English media by taking on to the newly launched Threads platform and confirming that Carey didn’t even have a haircut in the first place. The CA clarified the same as well. Soon after the confirmation from Smith and the Australian board, Cook apologised to Carey, terming it to be a case of mistaken identity.
Although the controversy settled after CA’s confirmation, Smith went on to take a hilarious jibe at English media over the haircut row ahead of the Manchester Test. Smith shared a picture with Carey on his official Twitter handle on Tuesday (July 18) and wrote: “I can confirm that Alex Carey has now had a haircut and that he paid for it.”

Speaking of the ongoing Ashes 2023, despite losing the Headingley Test, Australia still leads the five-match series (2-1) and are just one win away from winning the prestigious Ashes title.
