Australian captain Pat Cummins showcased his bowling brilliance on Day 2 of the third Ashes 2023 Test against England at Headingley. With a sensational delivery, Cummins dismissed his ‘bunny’ Joe Root on just the second ball of the day’s opening over.

Executing a well-directed short of a length delivery on the fourth-stump line, Cummins generated extra bounce that caught Root off guard. Root attempted to guide the ball with an open face but ended up edging it swiftly towards first slip, where David Warner positioned himself perfectly to take a catch to his right. Warner’s post-catch gestures indicated that the ball had some wobble in the air, adding to the magnificence of Cummins’ delivery.

With this wicket, Cummins achieved the remarkable feat of dismissing Root for the 10th time in Test cricket, making him the bowler with the most dismissals of the former English captain in the longest format. The list of bowlers with the most dismissals of Joe Root in Tests includes Cummins at the top with 10, followed by Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.

On the previous day, England exhibited a fiery bowling display after including Chris Woakes and Mark Wood in their pace attack. Dismissing Australia’s top four batters cheaply, they encountered a resurgent Mitchell Marsh, who made a stunning comeback to Test cricket after nearly four years. Marsh’s powerful innings of 118, partnered with Travis Head’s contribution, added 155 runs for the fifth wicket. However, England managed to dominate outside of that partnership.

Once Marsh was dismissed, England struck back emphatically, with Wood achieving a five-wicket haul as Australia lost their last six wickets for a mere 23 runs, getting bowled out for 263. Cummins then provided two crucial breakthroughs to ensure Australia didn’t go down without a fight. At stumps, England stood at 68/3, still trailing Australia by 195 runs.
