On Day 1 of the third Ashes Test, Mitchell Marsh made a stunning return to red-ball cricket after a four-year hiatus. Australia found themselves in a challenging position at 85/4 on a green pitch after opting to bat first. In the face of this pressure, the 31-year-old displayed exceptional batting prowess and dominated the English bowling attack, scoring a century in just 102 deliveries.
Mitchell’s brilliant innings came to an end at 118 runs, scoring at run-a-ball rate. During his time at the crease, the Attadale-born formed a crucial partnership of 155 runs for the fifth wicket with Travis Head. Marsh’s aggressive hundred, featuring 17 fours and 4 sixes, played a significant role in guiding Australia to a total of 263 runs in their first innings.
Not only did Mitchell rescued Australia from a difficult situation and put them in a strong position on a challenging wicket, but he also made his family proud. A video circulating on social media captured the joyous reactions of his elder brother, Shaun Marsh and other family members as they celebrated his century.
The elder Marsh, who has 38 Test caps to his name, shared a video on his Instagram story featuring the family’s celebration. The video included their father, Geoff Marsh, a former Australian cricketer and other family members. Shaun captured the moment of younger brother reaching his century with a quick single off Moeen Ali‘s bowling and erupted in an exuberant celebration from a bar in Bali, Indonesia.

The younger Marsh, also known as the “Bison,” return to the Test side was made possible by an injury to all-rounder Cameron Green. This opportunity allowed the aggressive batter to wear the prestigious Baggy Green for the first time since the final Test of the previous Ashes tour at the Oval in 2019.
Notably, Mitchell was a key piece of the Australian T20 World Cup triumph in 2021, earning ‘Player of the Match’ in the final and for his power-packed performances at number 3. He also earned the ‘Player of the Series’ award for 194 runs in three matches on the tour of India earlier this year.
