In the 3rd Ashes 2023 Test at Headingley, England’s Ben Stokes won the toss and decided to bowl first on a overcast morning. After being invited to bat first, Australia faced an early setback as opener David Warner (4) was dismissed by Stuart Broad in the opening over of the match. Warner’s dismissal to Broad marked the 16th time that the Englishman has got the better of him in Test cricket, highlighting their long-running battle.
In the presence of hostile English crowd and a grass-covered pitch on Day 1, Warner managed to start confidently by hitting a boundary off the first ball of the match. However, Broad quickly responded with his trademark angled delivery from around the wicket. The southpaw attempted a tentative defensive shot, resulting in a thick edge that was comfortably caught by Zak Crawley at second slip.
The English team made three changes to their lineup, bringing in express paceman Mark Wood and all-rounder Chris Woakes, who are making their first appearances in this Ashes series. Spinner Moeen Ali also returns to the England side.
This dismissal not only gave Broad another victory over Warner but also brought him within six wickets of the remarkable milestone of 600 Test wickets. Only four bowlers in history have dismissed a single batsman more times in Test cricket. Glenn McGrath dismissed England’s Michael Atherton 19 times, Alec Bedser got the better of Arthur Morris 18 times and Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh dismissed Atherton 17 times.

After the early dismissal of Warner, Australia made progress and crossed the 50-run mark. However, they lost two crucial wickets in the process. Usman Khawaja contributed 13 runs before being dismissed, while Marnus Labuschagne scored 21 before losing his wicket. Steve Smith, who had scored a century in the previous Test at Lord’s, tried to stabilize the innings but was dismissed for 22 by Broad. Travis Head, along with Mitchell Marsh, then guided the team to lunch without any further damage. At the break, Australia had reached 4/91 in 26 overs, with Head and Marsh at the crease. The partnership between Head and Marsh will be vital for Australia’s hopes of building a competitive total in the ongoing third Ashes Test.

Josh Hazlewood, who has been prone to injuries, was expected to be rested for the Headingley Test after playing in back-to-back matches. Additionally, Cameron Green has been diagnosed with a low-grade hamstring strain, ruling him out of the Leeds Test. This paved the way for Marsh to make his first Test appearance since September 2019.
