In a rain-soaked Test match at the Old Trafford, Marnus Labuschagne displayed a sensational batting performance, giving Australia a glimmer of hope despite the weather disrupting play on Day 4.

England’s chances of securing victory appeared threatened as Labuschagne stood firm at the crease, playing one of his finest knocks in Test cricket. The rain had limited England to only 30 overs of play overnight on Day 4, leading to increasing frustration for the home side as Labuschagne’s resilience became apparent.

Australia’s No. 3 batsman exhibited his class by smashing Joe Root for two sixes down the ground and reaching his second overseas Test century, marking his first hundred in any format in seven months. However, the day concluded on a somewhat bitter note as Labuschagne was booed off the field by English fans.

The cause of this discontentment was a surprising and lethal spell of spin bowling by Root, which ultimately undid the impressive batsman. Labuschagne attempted to cut a ball that bounced more than he anticipated, resulting in an edge behind the wicket to Jonny Bairstow.

The English players erupted in joy, believing they had their man. Captain Ben Stokes promptly opted for a review when the on-field umpire turned down their appeal. Replays confirmed Labuschagne’s contact with the ball, dispelling any doubts about the dismissal.

In the meantime, England team supporters booed the 29-year-old batter after watching the replays on the big screen. Some fans even termed Labuschagne’s act as ‘cheating’ on Twitter.

With significant action lost due to the weather on Day 4, the outlook for Day 5 remains uncertain. The forecast doesn’t bode well, and both teams will hope for favourable conditions to continue play. Cameron Green and Mitchell Marsh will resume batting for Australia, trailing England by 61 runs with five wickets remaining.
