Former England captain Michael Vaughan has suggested a big change in England’s playing XI for the third Ashes 2023 Test at the Headingley in Leeds. Vaughan called for leaving out a veteran England seamer from the team for the Headingley Test.
Speaking to Cricbuzz, Vaughan raised concerns about the performance of experienced England pacer James Anderson during the ongoing Ashes 2023. The 48-year-old has suggested that Anderson should be left out of the upcoming Leeds Test, citing the latter’s lack of rhythm and uncharacteristic mistakes. He even reckoned that if he were a part of the selection committee, he would have surely considered dropping Anderson for the upcoming match.
“There are three Tests to go after this and he certainly can’t play everyone. I’ll be leaving him out next week. He’s just had no impact, he’s an incredible performer, but you see him drop catches in the field. I’ve not seen that from Jimmy Anderson, he’s so sharp in the field.” said Vaughan
“His bowling has just lacked that zip and if England are going to turn to the short ball theory, surely they are going to have to go to a Mark Wood with a little bit of extra pace,” he added.
However, Vaughan further acknowledged that the legendary fast bowler could still contribute to the team and emphasized giving Anderson some rest before he makes a comeback on his home ground at Old Trafford.
“Not saying Jimmy is done. Miss next week, potentially play at Old Trafford, his home ground, in the 4th [Test]. Just give him a week off. He’s 41 years of age; he probably needs a little breather after bowling two Tests on the trot on absolute placid surfaces,” the 48-year-old clarified.
As far as Anderson’s form in the 2023 Ashes series is concerned, the third most successful Test bowler with 688 wickets in the format has struggled to find his rhythm. This lackluster performance continued into the Lord’s Test, where Anderson secured just one scalp in each innings. Furthermore, he made some uncharacteristic fielding errors by dropping catches, which raised concerns about his form and ability to contribute effectively.
